Julie Koenig is an Atlanta-based harpist with repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary music. An Ohio native, she began playing the harp professionally with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra as a teenager and she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Harp Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. While residing in Miami, Julie played harp along coastal Florida and performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Florida and the Palm Beach Opera.
As a freelancer throughout Metro Atlanta, Julie is principal harpist of the Georgia Symphony, DeKalb Symphony and Gwinnett Symphony orchestras. She also subs frequently with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Georgia Philharmonic, Atlanta Philharmonic, Alpharetta Symphony, and Johns Creek Symphony.
Ms. Koenig has backed various artists including Trisha Yearwood, Ray Charles, Indigo Girls, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Amy Grant & Michael W. Smith, Itzhak Perlman, and Yo-Yo Ma. She has also provided music at private events for President Jimmy Carter, Tyler Perry, Coca-Cola, Chick-fil-A, Home Depot, Takeoff, and Widespread Panic.
Julie has played harp for thousands of wedding ceremonies as well as countless wedding receptions, church services, orchestral performances and choral concerts, funerals and memorial services, solo and chamber recitals, corporate dinners and grand openings, housewarmings, bridal and baby showers, and so many other special occasions. She has been a featured soloist playing concertos by Debussy, Ravel and Mozart, has appeared on several recordings, and has performed in the European capitals of Rome, Vatican City, London, Dublin, Prague, Vienna, and Paris.
In her spare time, Julie can usually be found walking her golden retriever, attending an Atlanta Braves game or rooting for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Ms. Koenig plays a Venus Diplomat, built in Chicago. Her harp is acoustic but fitted with an electrical pick-up to amplify if needed. The Diplomat is a concert grand pedal harp with 47 strings, ranging nearly seven octaves. It has a dark red mahogany finish and golden fluted column reminiscent of the Edwardian style, and its spruce and maple hardwoods were cut from forests on Mount St. Helens and in the Pacific Northwest. It features a Lyon & Healy Style 17 French Renaissance gold soundboard design, making this harp truly one-of-a-kind.
